Tan Son Nhat International Airport is Vietnam’s largest international airport with an area of 800 hectares. The airport is located just 7 km from Ho Chi Minh city and was first built by the French Colonial Government back in the 1930s.

During the Vietnam War, Tan Son Nhat Airport was an important base for both the United States Air Force and the South Vietnamese Air Force. Within the war in 1975, the airport had been one of the busiest airbase worldwide. After the opening of its new international terminal in September 2007, Tan Son Nhat operates from two terminal building for international and domestic flights, giving the airport a total capacity of 15-17 million passengers per annum. It has recently accounted for nearly two thirds of the arrivals and departure at Vietnam’s international gateway airports.

There are over 40 airlines providing service to the airport with flights throughout Asia and Europe. Flights from North America usually arrive via Singapore, Bangkok or Hong Kong. National carrier Vietnam Airlines provides flights throughout the country. The arrivals Terminal have a tourism information desk, post office and foreign currency exchange. The Departures terminal is modern structure with air-conditioning, restaurant, duty-free shopping and a medical centre among other services. There are immigration desks for Asian and non-Asian residents. After cleared immigration checking and getting your baggage, you go straight for the customs clearance area. You will see a tourist information centre on your right and a foreign currency exchange on the left just outside the doors. There are also shops insides where you can buy cookies, chocolates, coffees, souvenirs and then you will find taxis, motorcycles and busses taking you to the city. You will see the friendly and warm staff with good skill in English.
